uh oh….rewind!

I got so excited about all this blogging stuff that I failed to define one important thing: what a blog actually is. When I thought a bit harder about it, it turned out I wasn’t actually all that sure, so I decided to do a rewind post and provide a little insight.

Sean provided heaps of useful links that defined ‘blogs’, one of these being my favourite reference, Wikipedia. The wikipedia page on blogs was where I started my research – their entries are usually simple enough that even thickheads like I can understand them.

Wiki (perhaps exceedingly simply) defines a blog as

“a website where entries are commonly displayed in reverse chronological order”

But I don’t really like this definition. I did a bit more research here, here and here(I like that last one best), and came up with my own definition. Perhaps it is also a bit rudimentary, but it captures the essence of blogs for me.

A blog is a space on the internet where one or more people can express opinions, thoughts or ideas (their own or others) through words, images and sounds. It is usually regularly updated (well, the good ones are), with the most recent entry coming first. Users of the internet can then jump on and respond to these entries. Available across the entire internet, blogs open a forum for discussion, praise, dismemberment etc. that provides a record keeping utility unlike any other.

I am going to try to use my blog to learn to shut up.
